The Tuolumne area of Yosemite is kind of my special playground. I visit 3-4 times a year just to do another day hike and take photos My visits range from extremely easy strolls, enjoying a river or valley feature during the day, before a swim in Tenaya lake to extreme long milage, high altitude adventure hikes trying to discover deeper and higher in the park.

It is a celebrated moment in time each year when the Eastern Access Point to Yosemite National Park is open for traffic over Tioga Pass. For us this means that some of our favorite day trip hiking is now only two hours from our front door.

- 20 Lakes Basin Loop: The 20 Lakes Basin Loop is a breathtaking day hike in the High Country of Yosemite National Park. Top 10 Day Hikes Off Tioga Pass: Exploring Yosemite’s Eastern Sierra
Good afternoon, readers! This is Charlie Pankey from Sierra Rec Magazine. Today, we’re diving into the top 10 day hikes off Tioga Pass, exploring the higher reaches of the Eastern Sierra in Yosemite National Park.
1. 20 Lakes Basin
Our first hike takes us to the 20 Lakes Basin, located just outside Yosemite’s Eastern border in the Hoover Wilderness range. Accessible via a dirt road off Tioga Pass, this high-altitude adventure features Saddleback Lake, a dam, and breathtaking scenery. 2. Cathedral Lakes
Moving on, Cathedral Lakes offers a popular and picturesque trailhead just past the Visitor Center. With upper and lower lakes, our tip is to head to the upper lake first for a unique perspective. The climb to the ridge between the lakes rewards you with panoramic views of Cathedral Peak. Don’t miss the chance to stop at Indian Rock for an incredible view of Half Dome.
3. May Lake and Mount Hoffman
May Lake, nestled at the base of Mount Hoffman, offers a shorter hike from the parking lot. With an easy trail, May Lake provides a stunning alpine setting. Consider taking the Dog Lake trail, climbing the mountain’s backside to the lake, and looping back down to Tuolumne Meadows for a diverse experience.
8. Elizabeth Lake
Accessible from campgrounds, Elizabeth Lake is a short hike to a great fishing spot. Enjoy the serene alpine meadow below Unicorn Peak and explore the area for stunning vista views of Yosemite’s high country.
9. Sunrise Lakes and Clouds Rest
